A small pounamu stone that has the power to create life is the mystical heart of the goddess Te Fiti. It is stolen by the demigod Maui, who planned to give it to humanity as a gift. As Maui made his escape, he was attacked by the lava demon Te Kā and knocked into the ocean, losing the heart of Te Fiti as well as his magical fish hook that gives him his powers.
